Shaped like an amphitheater and nestled in the South of France between Spain, the Mediterranean Sea, the Pyrenees & the Corbières Mountains, Roussillon is known for its diversity of wines & terroirs. The region’s unique geology and microclimates allows each of the 23 authorized grape varieties to reach its fullest expression in these soils. Bringing together a small community of 2,200 (young) winemakers families, 25 cooperative cellars & 345 private ones, the sunniest region of France produced 850 622 HL in 2015. With its unique patchwork of micro-terroirs, Roussillon offers a diverse range of wines in all colors (14 AOP & 3 IGP) including dry still wines and Vins Doux Naturels (Fortified Sweet Wines). Export figures to China in volume are constantly increasing since 2010 (+519% in volume in the five last years and +6% on the price). China’s market share represents now 15% of Roussillon exportations in volume, so it has become the second export market in volume for Roussillon’s wines in only five years! Considering the value, it has the third position ex aequo with Belgium. The average price is quite stable because of a decrease between 2011 and 2014, 100% of the wine exports are made in bottles. Red wine remains the main part of exportations (96% in volume) but all the offer segments are growing, especially fortified sweet wines with a better quality.
